Funds Solar Expansion
Nundu had been without a reliable source of electricity and water for many years.
- I-TEC (International Technical Electrical and Construction) designed and built solar and water purification systems were installed in October 2018.
- The impact of solar power is significant, providing the hospital, school of nursing and staff housing with electricity 24 hours a day
Butterfield Foundation partnered with Deaconess Nundu Hospital to triple the capacity of the 17 KVA system (see November 12, 2022 newsletter). Installation was completed in October 2023 by a team of I-TEC volunteers. Additional funds came from the Melvin Spencer estate. Thank you to all for making this project a success.

Fund School of Nursing Expansion
Urgent Need – Excessive maternal-child deaths are reported in the province where Nundu Deaconess Hospital is located. Construction of a classroom building to increase the capacity of the Nundu School of Nursing is urgently needed to train midwives.
The Plan – In 2015 it was recommended that Nundu School of Nursing open a midwife section, and in 2016 this section was opened, with no increase in the number of classrooms. The first midwife to graduate was in 2020 and to date 10 midwives have graduated. The number of qualified midwives is still insufficient, with birth attendants in only 35% of health centers. Assisted deliveries monitored by skilled birth attendants will increase, with corresponding decrease in maternal-child morbidity and mortality.
Impact – Construction of the Midwife Classroom Building will provide the learning environment for nurses and midwives who will provide care which is transforming. Adding four classrooms and two offices will allow space dedicated to the midwife track, both for lectures and facilitating after-hours study and tutoring.
There are many creative ways to give and get involved.
